Goodbye to PC Glyn Kelly an outstanding police officer

Glyn Kelly served Harringay and its community from 1993-2018

Harringay Green Lanes Traders and residents were saddened to hear about the passing of well-loved and respected former police officer Glyn Kelly this year.

Glyn passed away in August at his home in Newcastle aged 59 after a battle with cancer; he will be sorely missed.

Born in 1959 in the North East of England, Glyn became one of the most recognized and familiar figures on the Green Lanes. Mr Kelly joined the Tottenham Police Department in 1987 and spent most of his 31 years on duty, protecting and serving the people of Harringay.

Glyn, witnessed the massive demographic and economic changes on Green Lanes first hand and became well-acquainted with members of the local community including clergymen, business people, students and retirees.

Glyn retired from the force in February 2018 after 31 years as a dedicated beat and ward officer in Harringay. He was well-known in the community and loved by many.

Glyn once told the Special Edition that the most memorable things about Harringay were the uniqueness of the Harringay Ladders and the people, many of whom he had known for longer than his colleagues. He was especially fond of the President of Wightman Road Mosque Mr Ali and his daughter, Father Andreas of the Greek Orthodox Church and Shefik Mehmet and Rob Tao from the Traders’ Association.

In his spare time Glyn was a passionate runner who took part in various competitions and marathons, taking home a number of medals.

Glyn later retired and went back to Newcastle to help care for his parents. He had also liked the idea of retiring to the South of France but sadly passed away before he could realise this dream.

Last October, a plaque was installed on Green Lanes to pay respects to Glyn for all his service, remembering him as "An outstanding police officer who, as a bobby on the beat, tirelessly served Harringay and its community from 1993-2018 Gone too soon, but not forgotten".

He was a loyal, caring, loving and very special person who touched the lives of many people around him.
