Harringay: a growing middle-class

Azad Ayub, one of the most experienced real estate agents in Harringay, has also been an attentive observer of demographic changes in the area. According to Azad, who has been in the neighbourhood since 1974, Harringay is now a favorite destination among middle-class people and young professionals.

Manor House and Finsbury Park stations are in Zone 2 making for an easy commute to the city centre, while the area between Harringay Green Lanes station and Turnpike Lane underground attracts young people with its vibrant restaurants and café culture. These businesses are near constantly lively and busy, attracting people from all over London to the area. Azad emphasises that the businesses on the street make a significant contribution to making the region one a favourite living area with the economic potential and vitality they create. During the pandemic, house rents and prices have increased in Harringay as elsewhere. While it is becoming more and more difficult to find houses for rent and sale in the area, the restoration of large houses despite their old age and the increasing demand is matched by their growing prices.

Azad notes that many people who worked from home and continued to receive their normal salaries during the lockdown turned to the real estate market with their savings. Noting that many people with considerable savings are heading to buy or renovate their homes, Azad adds that Harringay has become a popular destination for young professionals.

According to Azad, the quality of many houses in the region has also improved. Noting that many people working or living in Central London are willing to pay more for the houses in Harringay. He says the prices in Harringay were previously worth almost half those in Winchmore Hill but are now equal.

While Harringay is a multicultural area, a significant proportion of new movers to the area are white English and middle-class Londoners who recognise the benefits of the area for young families according to Azad.

Despite all its charm he adds, Harringay is still an affordable area for young people, where it continues to be possible to find rooms from £500 per month. The area also attracts many organizations who look after people in need of care or who are intending to be rehabilitated in the community. To sum it up, Harringay is now desirable area to live in with this vibrant coffee shops and restaurants, and good quality housing covering a wide range for families and singles.
